VIDEO - WHAT IS A PURGE VALVE ON A SNORKEL
The purge valve is located at the bottom most portion of the snorkel. It may or may not be shielded with a plastic grill, depends on the manufacturer. Sand, dirt or grit may at times impede the snorkel purge valve's function so it is important that the snorkel be rinsed in fresh, clean water after each use. WHAT IS A PURGE VALVE ON A SNORKEL - VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
Some snorkels come with what is called a purge valve on it. What a purge valve is, is a one-way valve either made of rubber or of silicone. You can see it right here, and it goes flush up against the hole in the snorkel in the bottom. And the purpose of a purge valve is, when you have the snorkel out of your mouth, water may get in through here or if you duck underneath the water, it may come in through the top.

You need to get that water out by simply blowing through the snorkel, a nice, sharp breath, and that will force the water coming out the bottom, out the one-way valve, and also out the top. That's the purpose of a purge valve on a snorkel.
