This video demonstrates how to use your snorkeling fins in a way that exerts the least amount of energy without losing efficiency. The type of kick that is used in snorkeling is called the flutter kick and it is important for you to keep your legs as straight as possible. The snorkeler, while laying horizontal, in the water should have their toes pointed as if they were standing on the tips of their toes if they were vertical. The kicks should be wide and basically generated from the hips rather than the knees. You will notice that the snorkeler in this video does bend her knees while she is kicking but the kick is still generated from the hips. The bending of the knees in this instance is not detrimental to the kick as a whole. All snorkelers will end up bending their knees a bit as they reach their personal kicking comfort zone. Excessive knee bending usually will be an indication that the snorkeler is kicking too fast. Snorkel kicks should be slow and purposeful. The snorkeler will cover a greater distance with slow and wide kicks than they would if they were kicking fast.
