Sometimes there are things that you want to see at a closer distance. In order to get below the surface when snorkeling, snorkelers use what are called surface dives. This video demonstrates what is called a "Pike Surface Dive". This dive can be done from a stationary position or it may be done as part of your forward motion in the water. When snorkeling, the idea is to get as much of your legs and hips out of the water so that their weight will help to propel you beneath the surface of the water. This underwater view which shows the body position of the snorkeler as he descends below the surface. He does not begin kicking until he is sure that his fins have completely cleared the water's surface. This helps to streamline the entry making it less effort to get deeper.
