WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SNORKELS - VIDEO TRANSCRIPT:
Roy: Come on over here. I'm going to grab some snorkels here and I wanted to show you the difference that we have on the snorkels. Basically the purpose of a snorkel is so you don't have to keep lifting your head out of the water to take a breath of air. You'd rather see what's down there and keep your head in and let the water hold your head up.
Customer: Yeah.
Roy: When you're looking at a snorkel, basically there are three different types. You have a plain and simple snorkel that has the open end here and you breathe out of this end.
Customer: Okay.
Roy: Now this one, if you accidentally duck your head underneath the water, what's going to happen is water's going to go right down there, right?
Customer: Yes.
Roy: Now this snorkel does have a purge valve on the bottom, again, so that basically all you have to do is blast the water out by a sharp exhale and it'll come right out the bottom as well as out the top.
Now, some people prefer to go a little bit more high tech with the snorkel.
Customer: Right.
Roy: The next step that you have is what's called a semi-dry snorkel. Now a semi-dry snorkel basically has a deflector mechanism on the top.
Customer: Okay.
Roy: You still have the hole up here and you can see that hole, right?
Customer: Right.
Roy: But the deflector mechanism is if a wave were to come over the snorkel or you had somebody splashing water at you or you got a splash from waves, what's going to happen is the deflector is going to force most of the water down here and away from the internal tube.
Customer: Right. You can see that that hole is a little bit covered.
Roy: Yes, it's a little bit covered so it does deflect out. Now, semi-dry snorkels also have a bunch of different mechanisms. This one actually has a little deflector that pushes the water out here, okay?
Customer: Oh, okay.
Roy: A little bit smaller, more streamlined. Then you have this one here that looks like it has a cap on the top of it and this is a semi-dry also. You still see the hole going down there.
Customer: Right.
Roy: But it's a little bit offset so if water were to come in, be splashed in, it's going to go out down here on the bottom part of the valve --
Customer: Oh, I can see that.
Roy: -- before it will go down. However, when you do go underneath the water, using that camera that you have and you want to take a picture of the octopus that you saw down there, what's going to happen is it will fill up. Again, it does have the purge valve on the bottom.
Customer: Right.
Roy: So you blast the water out and it will also come out the top too.
Customer: Okay.
Roy: Now that's a little bit different than the plain snorkel, right?
Customer: Right.
Roy: The third style snorkel is what's called a dry snorkel.
Customer: I like that.
Roy: Sounds good?
Customer: I like the sound of that.
Roy: What a dry snorkel does is it keeps water from getting into the snorkel when you go underneath the water or if a wave comes over the snorkel, okay?
Customer: [That sounds neat.]
Roy: Now how that happens is, if you notice this goes up and down here.
Customer: Right.
Roy: When you dive underneath the water, what's going to happen is this is going to go up and it's going to block the water.
Customer: Oh I like that.
Roy: So the [total or tunnel] inside is going to be dry. Now this does have a purge valve on it.
Customer: Okay.
Roy: Now you may think why would it need to have a purge valve on it, right?
Customer: Right.
Roy: Well when you're surfacing and you take the snorkel out and you want to talk to your buddy, what's going to happen is water's going to get in through here again. And rather than turning the snorkel upside down and dumping the water out like most people do, all you have to do is do a sharp [grab] and the water's going to come out the purge valve.
Customer: Oh, that's neat.
Roy: Now there's a couple of different types of the total dry snorkels. This one here is a little bit more streamlined than this one.
Customer: Okay.
Roy: Okay? It does have the little lever mechanism on the inside that when you duck down underneath the water, either head first or feet first, it will shut off. The decision is yours. What do you like?
Customer: Well, not just because it's what (inaudible).
Roy: You don't want the snorkeling package
Customer: No, but I tend to like this.
Roy: The dry?
Customer: Yeah. I just tend to think that this would work better for me.
Roy: Okay. Then we'll put that with your snorkel and we'll work on fins next. How's that?
Customer: All right!
