When was the last time you sat down to dinner with your family? Not grabbing a plate and joining them in the living room watching the television, I mean a sit down dinner with no outside distractions at a real dining room table. A dinner where Junior wasn't engrossed in his game boy between bites and little miss texter wasn't texting OMG to her BFF. If you have a hard time remembering then it would probably be a good idea to find something that may rekindle that family togetherness that seems to be more a part of history rather that a fact of today or a dream for the future. There are many opportunities out there to get the family spark of togetherness back to a roaring fire but finding something that is of interest to every member of the family can be challenging. With the increased demands of society these days, quality time spent as a family is becoming something found in history books. Family communication have been reduced to leaving notes to one another, texts on cell phones and emails to one another. We already know that lack of family time is not a good thing. Psychologists, psychiatrists and family counselors are always advising people to spend quality time together as a complete family but because of diverse individual interests of each family member, it is difficult to find a family oriented activity that everyone will enjoy. Game nights are good but good luck trying to find a game that everyone likes to play. A family vacation is a good choice but even then, everyone will have a different idea of what to do while on vacation.
I offer to you an option (not a solution). How about getting them together for a snorkeIing adventure? I am not trying to say that taking the family snorkeling is the ultimate answer but try throwing it out there. Call your spouse, leave a note in junior's lunch box, text message your daughter. Leave the simple message "Do you want to go snorkeling?". You may be surprised on how fast you get replies from all of them. Snorkeling is one of the few sports out there that actually can be considered a family sport. Snorkeling will expose your family to a whole new world. The world under water.
With seventy-two percent of this planet covered with water, it is surprising to know that we know more about outer space than we do about our world underwater. Snorkeling is an excellent way to explore it. It is one of the few sports that does not involve competition or seeing who is smarter, faster, shrewder. stronger, older, younger or even who has a better memory. It is an active "spectator" sport which doesn't involve commercials or couches. It exercises the mind and body without the mind or body realizing that they are being excerised. The scenery is forever changing. You are suspended weightless with a birds-eye view of a world which is as awe-inspiring as it is serene. If this sounds inviting to you, why not invite your family to share in it? You might find that snorkeling is your family's ultimate sport.
