SNORKELING: HOW OLD IS TO OLD OR TO YOUNG?
While snorkeling knows no bias or prejudice, there are some considerations that should be addressed for those wishing to engage in this fascinating sport. There is a common misconception that you must know how to swim before you can snorkel. While the ability to swim is very beneficial, being comfortable in the water is more important. As with any sport, knowing your limitations and not exceeding those limitations are the key ingredients to fully enjoy the sport of snorkeling.
A common question is with regard to there being an age limit for snorkeling. How old is too old or too young for snorkeling? We have seen kids as young as 3 years old engaging in snorkeling. (As with any sport, parental supervision at all times is considered a requirement, not an option.) When introducing young children to snorkeling, we advise you to have them learn to use each piece of kids snorkel gear separately. Get them used to wearing a kids snorkeling mask first then progressively add the snorkel vest followed by the snorkel and finally the fins. This progression will increase their comfort level without overwhelming them. It is important that the equipment they are using is designed for children as proper fit is an important factor for increasing safety and comfort. The important thing with regard to getting a child to get used to snorkeling is to be patient (both with yourself and your child). Don't expect them to be able to be a snorkeling master in one day as sometimes it could take years depending on their age and comfort in the water. Read Snorkeling, How to Familiarize the Kids.
Considerations for those at the other end of the age spectrum is health. We like to consider snorkeling as a lazy person's sport but in reality it is a form of exercise. A lot of people don't realize this because their minds are more occupied with looking at the underwater scenery. It really is a more enjoyable way to exercise. If your exercise regimen for the last five years has consisted of sitting on the couch with the remote in your hand then it might be a good idea to get off that couch and introduce some regular exercise into your daily activities. This doesn't mean hit the gym five hours a day seven days a week, just introduce some activity that will benefit your body more than just your channel changer. Anyone with specific health concerns are advised to check with their physician before engaging in snorkeling or other activities that may aggravate any pre-existing conditions.
