Underwater Creatures

My gosh, I have seen it all. If you are heading to Australia, check out the “Cage of Death” with the stars of “Crocodile Dundee”. In Darwin, the company lowers a clear enclosure with 2 snorkelers in it and release the crocodile, Burt into the water. Burt is 15 feet long and one of 4 crocs who participate. How much does it cost? $120.00AUD / $112.00USD. Here is a video that we found on YOUTUBE.

Ever wondered why the tiger shark is fussy about their turtles for dinner? Check out this National Geographic clip, found on Hulu, why Logger Turtles are the sharks favorites.

And for those that can stomach it, it is Shark Week on Discovery Channel!

This video is a scuba diver was was diving with his underwater video camera and an octopus stole it while the video was still playing. Of course the diver chased the octo and got his video camera back. Grab you snorkel gear and sit back and enjoy!

What do you do when a 40 ton whale lands on your yacht?  Well if you are this South African couple, I guess all you could do was blubber.

When I showed this to a friend when it appeared on MSN.com, she noticed the the boat owner appeared in different clothing when the boat was at the dock.  I calmly told her that if a 40 ton whale suddenly breached and landed on my boat I am sure that I would have to change my clothes too.
Read the story about the whale out of water and check out the pictures. The entire story appears at the following link.  It is really a blessing that neither the whale or the boat owners were injured during the incident.

WOW…. check this out snorkelers! Geesh, I need to live closer to the water (I live in the burbs of Chicago).  California has all the fun…

Check out the rare dark jellyfish (Black Sea Nettle)  that is washing up in the San Diego coast. These beautiful creatures can grow 3 feet across and up to 30 feet long tentacles and if you are curious, they do sting.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, has a great video to watch. The Black Sea Nettle has found its way to the beaches of San Diego in the past and in 2007, they captured the jellyfish and took pictures, made the video and wrote the story on the Black Sea Nettle Jellyfish.

So grab your snorkel mask and snorkel and go check out the Black Sea Nettle… but please be very careful, wear a full Henderson Lycra Suit and do not touch the jellyfish, you will get stung.

Snorkeling with Penguins?

by Cathy on June 28, 2010

Wouldnt you just love to jump in the water with these adorable little creatures? Look how cute the penguins are!! But did you notice something different… have you ever seen an all black penguin?

Andrew Evans, who is traveling by bus from Washington D.C. to Antartica, came across the Rare Black Penguins on the island of South Georgia. The black penguins were confirmed with Dr. Allan Baker an Ornithologist and Professor of Environmental and Evolutionary Studies at the University of Toronto and head of the Department of Natural History at the Royal Ontario Museum, believes that the penguin has lost control of its pigmentation patterns and assumes that it is some kind of mutation. To read more on this beautiful creature, go to National Geographics. Or to view the genetic defect bird, watch the National Geographic video.

Want to know more on the black penguins? Here is a site from Noah Strycker who spent a season in 2008 in Cape Crozier, Antarctica. His interview with the Washington Post tells of his journey. Below is a picture he took and pictures of his work.
