Oceana has the opportunity to win $200000.00 and they need your help. All you have to do is go vote, once a week and on November 29th, the organization with the most votes gets money.

Ok, who is sponsoring this? TakePart and American Express. TakePart is an independent online community that connects its members directly to the issues that inspires them to engage, contribute and take action. Here is a motivated video from TakePart.

So what will Oceana do with $200000.00? This is what they plan on doing with the money….

- Launch major research missions, like our ongoing Gulf of Mexico expedition.
- Advocate for better protections for sharks and sea turtles in Washington, DC.
- Protect thousands of miles of the ocean from destructive fishing practices, like bottom trawling.

When You Snorkel, Do Fat People Float?

by Roy on September 24, 2010

This was a fun question and you probably expect a smart remark, but my friends, this is science. When a person floats or sinks is dependent of how much water they displace in relationship to their own body weight. If a person weighing 300 lbs displaces 310 lbs of water then they will float.  If the 300 lb person only displaces 290 lbs of water, then they will sink.

The explanation of buoyancy was expressed around 287 BC by a gentleman by the name of Archimedes who was a noted astronomer, inventor, physicist, mathematician and engineer. The explanation has endured where today it is know as the “Archimedes Principle” on buoyancy. I wrote an article that is easy to understand on Archimedes Principle.

This is old news but exciting news for the primary students around the Wellington, New Zealand area. We were first aware of this great program through the Wellington.Scoop. The students are learning the importance of marine biodiveristy thanks to the Experiencing Marine Reserves program. The EMR is run by the Wellington Marine Education Center and funded by the Wellington City Council and Department of Conservation.

“The object of the programme is to help students experience snorkeling while gaining an understanding of the important difference marine reserves make to the preservation of our aquatic ecosystems” says Claire Pascoe, an EMR Reginal Coordinator.  “We always get a really enthusiastic response from our students and the parents and teachers that volunteer to help out – we often have to virtually drag them out of the water! After the programme the students undertake a project to share what they’ve learn with the wider community.”

The students have the opportunity to snorkel in their local environment and then snorkel the Kapiti Marine Reserve. This program has been in effect since 2002.

My gosh, I have seen it all. If you are heading to Australia, check out the “Cage of Death” with the stars of “Crocodile Dundee”. In Darwin, the company lowers a clear enclosure with 2 snorkelers in it and release the crocodile, Burt into the water. Burt is 15 feet long and one of 4 crocs who participate. How much does it cost? $120.00AUD / $112.00USD. Here is a video that we found on YOUTUBE.

I have not had the opportunity to snorkel in France, yet, BUT I dont think I would keep it together, if I ran across this… snorkelers, check out this picture!

U.K.'s Daily Mail

We found an article in the Yahoo News Blog, about a fisherman, Raphael Biagini who reeled in a 30 pound koi carp in France where the fish are popular.

The article told us that the largest carp on record is 88 pounds and was caught in the United Kingdom.

More can be read on the worlds biggest carp on record, on DailyMail.co.uk.

Ever wondered why the tiger shark is fussy about their turtles for dinner? Check out this National Geographic clip, found on Hulu, why Logger Turtles are the sharks favorites.

And for those that can stomach it, it is Shark Week on Discovery Channel!

If these pictures do not make you want to grab your snorkel mask, snorkel and snorkeling fins, nothing will.

Cheapflights.com put together a list of the top beaches that celebrities go to… (and we found it on the ABC News) why am I writing about this on a snorkeling blog? Because the underwater world off of the beaches have great snorkeling. How do I know? I have had the opportunity to visit the 6 out of 10 beaches.
